Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder) – “Trich”

Trichotillomania occurs when the individuals find it near impossible to resist the urge to pull out their hair. This urge can occur in any place hair grows. Individuals describe the symptoms to feel like an intense urge to pull their hair out followed by a sense of relief. The urge can occur in times of stress or relaxation e.g., watching TV. Trich is highly secretive as many individuals experience shame and guilt alongside their pulling. Most people pull from these areas:

  • Scalp
  • eyebrows
  • eyelashes
  • genital area
  • beard or moustache
